How to Care for Wool Blankets

How to Care for Wool Blankets

Wool requires much gentler handling than your everyday linens so it is important to wash these products with great care. Once the fabric becomes warped or felted, it will never be the same again. Avoid mishandling by following our easy guide to caring for your beloved wool blankets.

How to Wash

Because wool is so delicate, it is best to only wash or spot-clean your blanket if it is noticeably soiled or smelly. Regularly hanging them outside for a few hours is a great way to keep them fresh and clean to your standards.

Step 1: When it does come time to deep clean your blanket, first check for any care tags to see if it is labeled dry-clean only. If it’s not, you are free to continue with the steps ahead.

Step 2: Shake out the blanket and closely examine the fabric for any holes, tears, or unraveling threads. Make any necessary repairs prior to washing, as washing can worsen existing damage.

Step 3: Using a soft-bristled brush, stroke the threads of the blanket in the same direction to remove dirt. You can also use a depilling tool during this step if needed.

Pro-Tip: Stains should be treated immediately, using club soda or a 1:2 vinegar solution to soak the affected area. Blot the stain but be careful to not rub harshly.

Step 4: Place the blanket in the washing machine and let it soak in cold water for 15 minutes. Then, run the washing machine on the delicate or wool cycle using gentle soap.

How to Dry

Once the wash cycle is completed, squeeze the excess water from the blanket, without twisting or wringing it. Avoid putting wool in the dryer as the fibres will cause it to shrink. Instead, allow the blanket to air-dry outdoors, be sure to keep it away from direct sunlight.
