How To Brighten Dingy Whites with Bleach
Whether it’s by age, incorrect wash settings, stains, or whatever it may be, it always seems we find our white clothing to be dingy, faded, and dull. Here’s some tips on how to brighten your dingy whites with bleach!
As it says in the title, this method uses chlorine bleach to whiten your clothing. This method is for cotton whites such as socks, underwear, and other clothes that are bleach-safe, make sure to check the care tags to see if your clothing is bleach safe.
Step by Step Cleaning Process:
- Make sure to set your washers temperature to the hottest possible temperature. Hot water will help break down the stains more than cold water will.
- Set the wash cycle to “regular/whites.” Depending on what kind of machine you have, if you don’t have a regular or whites setting, set it to normal.
- Add the recommended amount of laundry detergent for your size load into the empty wash tub and allow the washer to fill.
- When the washer is half full, add the designated amount of bleach for your size load. If you have a bleach dispenser, you can add the bleach there. If not, add the bleach to the wash BEFORE any clothing is added.
- Once the washer is filled, add your whites.
- NOTE: Make sure the bleach is evenly distributed in the water, it may harm your clothes if a lot of bleach hits them at once when dropped in. If you aren’t sure, close the laundry lid and let it run for a few seconds, this will start the cycle and will mix the water.

- Let the clothes soak for at least 20 minutes. If you have a “pre-soak” cycle on your washer you can use that. If not, simply leave the lid up or push the dial back in, this will generally prevent the washer from running.
- Feel free to soak your whites in the detergent and bleach at home and then wash them at one of our facilities if you’d like.
